DVD Extra: 'The Lord of the Rings' extended edition

By Steve Jones, USA TODAY

Ten years after the release of the first film in director Peter Jackson's beloved The Lord of the Rings trilogy, the franchise based on the novels of J.R.R. Tolkien gets a Hi-Def video treatment that is as expansive as Middle-earth itself.

  • Sean Astin and Elijah Wood are on a quest to destroy The One Ring in The Lord of the Rings trilogy.

New Line Cinema

Sean Astin and Elijah Wood are on a quest to destroy The One Ring in The Lord of the Rings trilogy.

The 15-disc boxed set The Lord of the Rings Motion Picture Trilogy: Extended Edition ? Blu-ray (2001-2003, Warner Bros., PG-13, $120) restores nearly two hours of deleted scenes to 2001's The Fellowship of the Ring, 2002's The Two Towers and 2003's The Return of the King. The running time for the three films alone exceeds 11 hours, and there is an additional 26 hours of bonus material.

The fantasy tale tells the story of the hobbit Frodo Baggins (Elijah Wood) who battles to save his world from the evil Dark Lord Sauron. He and a band of heroes undertake a treacherous journey through a war-torn Middle-earth, a world peopled by all manner of humans, dwarfs, elves, wizards and other strange creatures, to find and destroy Sauron's greatest source of power, The One Ring.

Tolkien's vision is brought to life by groundbreaking special effects and an all-star cast that includes Ian McKellen, Liv Tyler, Viggo Mortensen, Sean Astin, Cate Blanchett, John Rhys-Davies, Orlando Bloom, Christopher Lee, Hugo Weaving, Ian Holm and Sean Bean.

The films were wildly successful critically and commercially. They earned a combined 30 Oscar nominations and won 17. The Return of the King won all 11 for which it was nominated (tying Ben-Hur and Titanic for most received). The movies were all filmed concurrently in Jackson's native New Zealand at a combined cost of $281 million. They wound up earning $1 billion at the box office in the USA and $3 billion worldwide.

In the boxed set, five discs each are devoted to the films. The movies themselves are split into two parts on separate Blu-ray discs, and three DVD discs of bonus material accompany the movies. Each gets a feature-length behind-the-scenes documentary created by filmmaker Costa Botes (Saving Grace) on the sets of each movie.

Other discs feature commentaries by the director, cast and crew members, discussions on how the screenplay was developed from the books, the creation of the elaborate sets, how the hundreds of special effects were integrated, and an interactive Middle-earth atlas.

Jackson is not done with Tolkien and neither are many of the actors from the Rings movies. In March, the director began filming The Hobbit as a two-part epic prequel to the trilogy: The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey and The Hobbit:There and Back Again. Filming again is taking place in New Zealand. The movies are scheduled to be released in December 2012 and December 2013, respectively. Martin Freeman stars as Bilbo Baggins and Richard Armitage stars as Thorin Oakenshield. Wood, McKellan, Bloom, Weaving, Holm, Lee and Blanchett will reprise their roles.

Georgia Immigration Law: Thousands Protest For Reform At State Capitol

ATLANTA (AP) -- Thousands of marchers stormed the Georgia Capitol on Saturday to protest the state's new immigration law, which they say creates an unwelcome environment for people of color and those in search of a better life.

Men, women and children of all ages converged on downtown Atlanta for the march and rally, cheering speakers while shading themselves with umbrellas and posters. Capitol police and organizers estimated the crowd at between 8,000 and 14,000. They filled the blocks around the Capitol, holding signs decrying House Bill 87 and reading "Immigration Reform Now!"

Friends Jessica Bamaca and Melany Cordero held a poster that read: "How would you feel if your family got broken apart?"

Bamaca was born in the U.S., but her mother and sister are from Guatemala. She said she fears they will be deported.

"I would be here by myself," said Bamaca, 13. "I have a feeling (the governor) doesn't know the pain affecting families. If he were to be in our position, how would he react?"

Adelina Nicholls, executive director of the Georgia Latino Alliance for Human Rights, said the crowd was sending a message.

"They are ready to fight," Nicholls said. "We need immigration reform, and no HB87 is going to stop us. We have earned the right to be here."

Azadeh Shahshahani of the American Civil Liberties Union of Georgia called the rally inspiring and said she hoped lawmakers would recognize the law's potential to damage the state.

"I think it's going to have an impact," she said. "Unfortunately, the damage has already been done as far as people of color having second thoughts about moving to Georgia."

Several different groups stood with the largely Latino crowd, including representatives from the civil rights movement. The Rev. Timothy McDonald, an activist who has been supportive of immigration protesters, was among the speakers showing his solidarity.

"You are my brothers and my sisters," McDonald told the crowd. "Some years ago, they told people like me we couldn't vote. We did what you are doing today. We are going to send a message to the powers that be ... that when the people get united, there is no government that can stop them. Don't let them turn you around."

MiLi Lai, a student at Emory who is Chinese, also attended the rally because the immigration law doesn't just apply to Latinos, but "all non-American people."

"We are the same community," Lai said. "We have to fight for our rights."

Bellanira Avoytes came to the rally with her husband and three children. Although she is a legal resident and her children were born in Georgia, she does not see herself as separate from undocumented Latinos.

"I have family who are not residents," she said. "I am together with the Latin people. I love Georgia. I have stayed here for 18 years. I want to buy a house here."

Saturday's rally follows a "day without immigrants" organized Friday, when some parts of the law took effect. It was organized by the Georgia Latino Alliance for Human Rights. The organization asked businesses to close and community members not to work or shop to protest the law.

On Monday, a judge temporarily blocked key parts of the law until a legal challenge is resolved. One provision that was blocked authorizes police to check the immigration status of suspects without proper identification. It also authorizes them to detain undocumented immigrants. Another penalizes people who knowingly and willingly transport or harbor undocumented immigrants while committing another crime.

Parts of similar measures in Arizona, Utah and Indiana also have been blocked by the courts.

Provisions that took effect Friday include one that makes it a felony to use false information or documentation when applying for a job. Another provision creates an immigration review board to investigate complaints about government officials not complying with state laws related to undocumented immigration.

Peter Andre doesn't say bad things about Katie Price to his kids

While Peter Andre searches for his ideal woman, he's decided to keep his romances well away from home.

After his painful divorce from Katie Price, 33, Pete dated Elen Rivas, but there was no smooching in front of his kids.

Junior and Princess have never seen Pete in bed with a date.

'It won't happen until I find the woman I'm going to marry,' he tells us.

'I don't want to confuse my kids.

'The other day my cousin Miranda, who helps out with the kids, was making my bed and Princess came in, put her hands on her hips and told her to go out of Daddy's room because girls aren't allowed in there.

'It was very funny.

'My kids have never seen me be intimate with any woman other than their mother.'

Pete, 38, also never criticises his ex in front of their children.

'They'll never hear me saying anything negative about Kate,' he insists.

'If they ask anything, I just talk about something else.'

Karl Lagerfeld And Giorgio Armani Share A Fashion Man-Hug At Monaco?s Royal Wedding [PHOTOS]

We wonder if Karl Lagerfeld was just a little jealous that Giorgio Armani got to design Charlene Wittstock?s gown for today?s royal wedding in Monaco.  If he was, it didn?t show as the Chanel bigwig and Armani shared a bro hug in the courtyard of the Prince?s Palace before Charlene walked down the aisle to marry Prince Albert of Monaco.  Why are we more impressed with Catherine, Duchess of Cambridge?s white Reiss dress than with what Wittstock?s Swarovski-heavy gown?  Ar we that spoiled by the wonder that is Kate Middleton?  According to the Daily Mail, the custom-made Prive gown took Armani?s team 2500 hours to make, 700 of which was spent on the embroidery alone.

PHOTOS: Europe?s Finest Break Out Their Fancy Hats For Will And Kate?s Wedding

Albert and Wittstock, now Princess Charlene of Monaco, were married yesterday in a civil ceremony, and today they took part in a Catholic mass today to become man and wife in front of 850 guests including Karolina Kurkova, Naomi Campbell and boyfriend Vladislav Doronin, and the Earl and Countess of Wessex (Queen Elizabeth?s youngest son, Edward and his wife, Sophie).  So?Wittstock didn?t manage to escape the wedding, but one can?t help but notice that she doesn?t look all that pumped to marry Albert.

Celebrities Shield Their Face From The Sun

Celebrities always try and keep their face looking fabulous. After all, it?s the thing that most people recognize and it?s what is going to show up on a huge movie screen. So it?s no wonder that they go to great lengths to protect it.

One great way to protect against the harmful rays of the sun? Hats! Celebrities love hats. Wearing hats, buying hats, eating things from hats?probably not the last one, but you get the pictures. Hats are often paired with sunglasses to prevent the paparazzi, but as well as know that usually never works.

We?ve compiled a list for you of some of our celebrities looking fabulous with a brim atop their head. My personal favorite is the picture of George Hamilton. Yes, he?s in the snow, but I love seeing the tanned man, in the cold, wearing a hat.

Any pictures you?re particularly fond of? Or do you have a favorite celeb who often wearing a protective hat that we?ve missed? Let us know! And remember, you?ve gotta protect that face!

Kate Middleton and Her Prince: Charming in Canada

Newlyweds the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge have been charming our neighbors to the north with characteristic grace and style, as their visit to North America continues.

Not only are they spending nine days of the eleven-day tour in Canada (with two days in California before they return home), but since they arrived June 30, they seem to be cramming as many activities as possible into each day there.

Among William and Catherine's flurry of appearances and official duties so far: unveiling a new military mural in Ottawa, testing their culinary skill at a Montreal culinary school, and taking in fireworks at a Canada Day celebration on Friday. Keeping Princess Diana's legacy alive, they also spent time with ailing children in a Quebec cancer ward.

In a touching ceremony on Saturday, People.com reports that the couple planted a hemlock tree on the grounds of Rideau Hall, home of Canada's governor general, in a significant spot: next to an oak tree that William's parents, Charles and Diana, planted on William's first birthday in 1983.

Kate's fashions have been conservative, and her penchant for fascinator hats was seen in a red maple-leaf design she wore to a Canadian citizenship ceremony. See more of the royal couple's first few days in Canada in these photos after the jump.

Salma Hayek's Husband, François-Henri Pinault, Is the Father of Linda Evangelista's Son

Salma Hayek's Husband, François-Henri Pinault, Is the Father of Linda Evangelista's Son | Henri Pinault, Linda Evangelista, Salma Hayek

Salma Hayek's daughter, Valentina Paloma Pinault, 3, has a second half-brother.

According to court papers recently filed by supermodel Linda Evangelista, her son, Augustin James, 4, was fathered by Hayek's husband, François-Henri Pinault. Hayek and Pinault wed in 2009, but dated since 2006, around the time Evangelista got pregnant. (Pinault has two other children ? a son and a daughter ? from his previous marriage, which ended in divorce in 2004.)

Now Evangelista has filed a petition seeking support from the French businessman, 49.

"In the filing, it says the child 'was born out of wedlock to [petitioner] Linda Evangelista, 46, and that [Pinault] acknowledged [her] allegation,' " a source familiar with the filing tells PEOPLE. "It says, 'It is decided that Pinault is the father of [Evangelista's son], Augustin James.' "

It has not been determined how much support Pinault will be obligated to pay for his child with Evangelista.

"All that's left is for a magistrate to go over the father's filings and make a determination of support, which will last until the child is 21," the source says. "[Pinault] is asking to be able to testify by phone."

Meanwhile, another source tells PEOPLE: "This is no Schwarzenegger case. No one was married. There was no infidelity."

The Pinault family's luxury goods empire is reportedly worth $16-18 billion. Pinault's 2010 salary was $5.4 million, according to Bloomberg Businessweek.

In New York, where the court papers were filed, the law requires a father to pay 17 percent of what he earns in child support. This would mean Pinault should owe around $920,000 for that year.

Reps for Hayek, 44, and Evangelista have not returned request for comment.
